National walk your dog week

This week is National Walk Your Dog Week.  It’s also one of the very best times of the year to get out and get some exercise with your best friend. Comfortable temperatures, low humidity and no bugs make walking especially enjoyable. Everyone knows the benefits of walking. Even those who cannot run can find the health benefits of walking. Experts say that if you walk 30 minutes a day, three days a week, you can lower your blood pressure, retain more energy, and lose weight.  The same goes for your dog. Walking is a great way to burn calories with almost no negative impact. Your dog enjoys her walk for a few reasons. They get to “smell the roses”, read their “Pee Mail” (and leave a reply), and they enjoy the time spent with you. Walking with your dog can be a bonding experience. You’re the person who gets them out and about so you’re pretty special in their eyes.

One of the best things you can do while you walk your dog is to try and experience life through their eyes. They see and smell things that most people would ignore. Watch your dog and see if you can spot what grabs her attention. Squirrels, bugs, waving branches and fluttering leaves are interesting things to a dog. You’ll be surprised at the beauty of these ordinary things when looked at through the child like eyes of a dog. You may find that you’re noticing things you have never noticed before!

This time of year, the days are getting shorter too. You’re morning or evening walks may take place in the Pup lightdark. One of the things you use in the dusk or dawn is a flashlight, right? Maybe you could use a little extra light.  There’s a product out there that will let your dog help you navigate in the darkness. It’s called the Pup Light. It’s a very brilliant LED light on a reflective collar that lights up the way and also makes your dog visible to cars and people. We’ve found it is the perfect tool to find where your dog has pottied so you can easily pick it up.

With Halloween approaching, a Pup Light will ensure that your dog stands out in the crowds while Trick or Treating. Be prepared for the extra attention your dog will get when everyone sees that she’s carrying her own flashlight!

If you walk with a group of dogs and they all have a Pup Light, you’ll be amazed at the amount of light that is thrown out in front of the pack!Golden with Pup Light

We have found another benefit of the Pup Light is it shows you just what your dog is getting into.  We heard of one case where a dog was nose to nose with a skunk and the light gave the owner just enough warning to avoid a stinky disaster.

If you have a large yard, or go to a place where your dog can run free, the Pup Light is a great way to keep track of your dog should you find yourself out at night.

They run off of four AAA batteries that can last up to 150 hours and they have a reflective band on an elastic collar. They will fit a dogs neck from 8 inches to 26 inches, so they will fit most dogs and puppies.

They are available at The Pet Pantry, 78A Lincoln Street, Exeter, NH
